Friday5: week 54

Friday5: week 54

Press week! Mostly this means madness and lots of work. Which is why I probably look a little more than slightly insane. I know this is totally unusual. I am thinking about dropping the weekly sketch feature from the blog. I will continue to post sketches but I really want to make better art, not just more art. By not giving myself that weekly deadline, I think I will feel less pressured for quantity over quality. ANYWAY: Cheers & I hope that your weekend is heavy on the quality. <3

Meet Dolores.

Meet Dolores.

Things I love this Thursday:

  • Meet Dolores. My new(ish) bicycle: an Electra Ladies Amsterdam Classic 3i. I’ve been riding her for a couple months but I finally found a few minutes to snap some pictures of her. Sadly, she’s got some scratches already but purely cosmetic stuff. 3 gears. Skirt guard. Encased chain. Comfy seat. Cup holder!
  • My new panniers for Dolores! I was using an orange crate strapped to the back but oh! the panniers make a world of difference for weight distribution. I can carry about the same amount of stuff but I can actually use my kickstand for it’s intended purposes—even when the panniers are full!
  • Funky colored manicures. Turquoise and minty green. While dressing in a slightly more subdued fashion at work, having a little flash of the unusual makes me happy!
  • Discovering after many years that I am relatively athletic. Bootcamp is helping me to see that and it’s a strange sight to me but a pleasing one nonetheless.
  • Skype dates (and video chats) with family and friends. I spent 30ish minutes talking to my parents and sister last Sunday over Skype and it was really nice. I am expecting this to become a much more frequent occurrence.

What do you love this Thursday?

Practice what you preach. Embrace the changes coming. Ride the tides that rise and crash. Ever evolving. Do not stagnate. Adaptation. Focus on the forward.

What’s giving my heart palpitations this week?

  • Playing with embroidery
  • Secret projects
  • Getting my momentum again
  • The finished give-away notebook and a few extra surprises tucked in
  • Making progress on the apartment little by little. Once we get some pictures on the walls, despite the cardboard boxes that are in various parts of the place, it will feel a lot more like home.

What’s your week’s thrill?

Tonal Tuesday: a modern man

What am I picturing: a danish mid-century teak, black-buttery leather arm chair. A cashmere scarf. Bourbon. Feel cozy yet?

A note about the black in this color palette:
If you’re a designer, you know that CMYK stands for the printing process that uses 4 diffferent inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. This is known as 4-Color prints. Any black that consists of more than one ink is referred to as a Rich Black. It’s the black that’s “blacker than black.”

More technical jibber jabber: Don’t go using Rich Black for small type on something that’s to be printed in large quantities on thinner paper*. If the printer’s registration is a smidge off, this can ruin the legibility of your type.

*That’s a lot of caveats, you might say. Well, yes, there are a lot of factors that go into this equation but this is a good general rule. Your mileage may vary using heavier weight, more absorbent paper (not glossy) or small enough quantities that great care goes into each individual print.
